How to prepare for your in-home Lifestyle Newborn Session

Hey Friends! I’m here this week to share some super important and helpful information about lifestyle in-home newborn sessions. If you’ve opted for an in-home lifestyle newborn session or are considering one, here are 4 of my best tips to consider and help you prepare for your session.

1. Preparing Your Home

Your home will serve as the backdrop for these precious memories, so ensuring it’s tidy and clutter-free is important. Consider decluttering the spaces where you would like the photos to be taken, typically the nursery, master bedroom, and/or living room. Tuck away things like, cords for chargers, baby essentials like diapers, wipes and sound machines, dog beds, extra knick-nacks on shelves, artwork that may be distracting on your walls. Anything you don’t want in your images would be best to hide them for the photo session.

2. Ensuring Proper Lighting, Time of Day, and Space

Natural light is the essential especially in an in-home setting. Choose a time of day when your home is filled with soft, natural light. This might mean scheduling the session in the morning or early afternoon when the sunlight is gentle and flattering versus afternoon light being a bit more harsh. I typically find the morning hours around 10am work well for in-home sessions. Ensure there’s enough space for the photographer to move around comfortably, especially if you have specific areas you’d like to include in the photos. We will go over this more in-depth if you are booking a session with me. I always request pictures of the spaces we will be in prior to the session so that I can ensure proper space is available.

3. Colors in Your Home and Their Impact on Images

The colors in your home can significantly influence the mood and tone of your photos. Let’s say you have a dark blue accent wall or a pink nursery, those colors can reflect onto skin and negatively affect your images. If you’re envisioning neutral, timeless images, be sure the colors of your interior spaces reflect that including pillows, bedding, and window treatments. We want your family and sweet new baby to be the main focus of your images and free from distractions. I always recommend neutral, soft earth tones tones for newborn sessions especially.

4. Benefits of Choosing In-Home Sessions

Choosing an in-home session offers several advantages and are some of my very favorite sessions First, it allows you to have the most meaningful environment of all, home. The stage of life you are in is currently unfolding in your home where so many memories are made. This is the perfect opportunity to document this meaningful space you’ll be able to look back on for years to come. Your home provides a natural setting that reflects your family’s personality and lifestyle, making the photos more personal and intimate. Being at home eliminates the stress of traveling with a newborn, especially if you are experiencing any trauma related to birth, feeding, anxiety over traveling, etc. being at home allows you to relax and have all of your comforts right next to you. If you have older kiddos already it can be helpful for them to have distractions, take breaks and get a snack in their own space where they’re most comfortable.

I hope this information was helpful for you to prepare for your in-home newborn session. If you are in the Roseville, Rocklin, Auburn, Lincoln, Folsom areas and are wanting some more information about lifestyle newborn sessions I’d love to chat more with you!
