What to Wear for Family Photos: My Top Tips & Favorite Retailers
Hey Friends! Here are some of my top tips for styling yourself and your family for photos & my absolute favorite retailers (especially for Mama’s)
Top Tips
Start with you (mom)! Us mom’s are usually the hardest to dress, our bodies are changing a lot in our child bearing years and it’s more challenging to find something we love and feel our best in. Starting with yourself will make things a lot easier since kiddos and Dad’s are usually pretty easy to dress.
Choose a color palette! Choose 4-5 coordinating colors and stick to it! Choose a different color or color variation for each person so no one is in the exact same color. I always recommend neutral and earth tone color palettes that will suit your home as well.
Coordinate, don’t match! I know it’s adorable to have your kiddos wear matching outfits, but in 30+ years from now it will be a trend that may make you cringe. Coordinating without matching perfectly is key to timeless style & images.
What to do: Choose a flowy dress or set for yourself that allows for movement, you can always do a second more casual look if you’re a denim lover. Choose organic materials like cotton and linen that add texture. Choose nude or neutral nail polish that will disappear in images instead of distract.
What to avoid: Logos, polos, athletic tennis shoes, spray tans, bright distracting nail polish, heavy fake eyelashes (or too heavy makeup), ball caps.
Styling is probably the most important aspect to ensure your images turn out beautiful and timeless. Be sure to take extra time to prepare in advance so you can be fully prepared and not stressed trying to put together outfits at the last minute. I am always here to help and provide each client with a custom style board with links to purchase items, gorgeous dresses and sets for mom’s to choose from in my client closet and a thoughtfully designed style guide that goes over every detail of styling your family before your session. I am always available to you to call, text or email with any questions along the way as well.
